Hinagu Onsen ryokan Hamazen continues operations following Kumamoto earthquake

Hinagu Onsen, a historic hot spring district in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, is working toward recovery following the Kumamoto earthquake on July 28. The seismic event caused significant damage to the area, including the collapse of the entrance and walls of the Kinparo inn, a registered tangible cultural property, and damaged piping systems that forced many facilities to close.

Amidst these recovery efforts, Hamazen Ryokan remains open to guests. The inn features 12 guest rooms, each equipped with a private semi-open-air bath supplied by its own natural spring. The sodium-calcium chloride hot spring is served via a unique dragon-shaped spout and is used without dilution or disinfection.

In addition to the hot springs, the area maintains local culinary traditions, including Hinagu chikuwa and regional specialties such as horse sashimi and Wagyu beef. While earthquake damage remains visible throughout the streets, many traditional wooden inns and local shops continue to operate.
