Hinckley railway bridge hit by two lorries in two days

The A5 Watling Street railway bridge near Hinckley, Leicestershire, has been struck by lorries twice within two days. The first collision occurred at 05:52 BST on Sunday, followed by a second road traffic collision on Monday afternoon that resulted in the roof of a lorry being ripped off.

Network Rail, which previously identified this structure as the ‘most bashed in Britain’ after it was struck 22 times between April 2024 and March 2025, reported that no structural damage was found following the latest incidents. The collisions caused approximately 16 minutes of delay to rail services.

While plans exist to lower the road beneath the bridge to prevent further strikes, the project was recently delayed. Developer Mountpark had previously agreed to lower the road as part of a logistics park development, but infrastructure improvements remain stalled.
