Hindalco’s Baphlimali mine becomes India’s first ASI-certified bauxite mine

Hindalco Industries Ltd subsidiary Utkal Alumina International Limited (UAIL) has secured certification under the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard for its Baphlimali bauxite mine in Odisha, India. This marks the first bauxite mining operation in India to achieve this specific certification.

The certification covers the full upstream chain at the Baphlimali mine in the Rayagada district, including mine planning, bauxite extraction, onsite crushing, and transportation via a conveyor system. The mine has an annual production capacity of 8.5 million tonnes and serves as a primary bauxite source for UAIL’s alumina refinery.

The ASI Performance Standard evaluates operations based on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) parameters, such as biodiversity conservation, greenhouse gas emissions, community engagement, human rights, and occupational health and safety. This achievement expands Hindalco’s ASI-certified portfolio to 11 operations across its mining, smelting, and downstream manufacturing processes.
