Hindu devotees observe Pitri Paksha rituals globally
Devotees across the globe are observing Pitri Paksha, a two-week Hindu period dedicated to paying homage to deceased ancestors through prayers, lectures, and rituals such as Puja and Pind Daan.
In Gaya, India, the Pitru Paksha Mahasangam Mela is being held from September 25 to October 10. International pilgrims from countries including Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Italy, and Ghana have traveled to the banks of the Falgu River to perform traditional rituals at the Vishnupad Temple and other sacred sites. Many participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to seek peace for departed loved ones.
In the United States, the tradition is largely preserved by the Indo-Caribbean American Hindu community, including descendants of immigrants from Guyana, Trinidad, and Suriname. In New York, nightly observances are held at the Shri Tulsi Mandir in Queens, reflecting how the diaspora has adapted these ancient customs to urban environments.
