Hindu traditions celebrate Goddess Lakshmi and Ashtalakshmi

In Hindu tradition, the worship of Goddess Lakshmi represents a holistic view of prosperity that extends beyond material wealth to include health, knowledge, moral integrity, and harmonious family relationships.

One significant observance is Kojagori Lakshmi Puja, performed on the full moon day following Durga Puja. The term ‘Kojagori’ translates to ‘who is awake’, signifying spiritual alertness. Devotees often stay awake in devotion, cleaning and decorating their homes with lamps to welcome the goddess, who is believed to bestow blessings upon those who show hospitality and devotion.

Beyond general worship, the tradition recognizes the Ashtalakshmi, or eight distinct forms of the goddess, each representing a different type of abundance:

• Adi Lakshmi: The primeval form and root of the family. • Dhana Lakshmi: Governs money and material security. • Dhanya Lakshmi: Represents food, grain, and agricultural abundance. • Gaja Lakshmi: Symbolizes regal prosperity and status. • Santana Lakshmi: Blesses families with children and continuity. • Veera Lakshmi: Represents courage and fearlessness. • Vijaya Lakshmi: Associated with victory and success in endeavors. • Vidya Lakshmi: Blesses learning, wisdom, and intellectual wealth.
