Hindu traditions for Lord Shiva Puja offerings
Hindu traditions outline specific guidelines for offerings used during Shiva Puja, particularly during the holy month of Sawan. Devotees are encouraged to understand the spiritual significance of various items to enhance their worship.
Preferred offerings include Bel Patra, which represents purity and balance, and Gangajal or clean water, which symbolizes the surrender of ego. Other traditional elements include milk for Abhishek, sandalwood paste for peace of mind, white flowers for simplicity, and Vibhuti (sacred ash) to represent the temporary nature of worldly achievements.
Conversely, certain items are traditionally avoided in Shiva worship. Tulsi leaves are associated with Lord Vishnu rather than Shiva due to sacred narratives in the Puranas. Turmeric, kumkum, and sindoor are typically reserved for Goddess Parvati as symbols of feminine energy. Additionally, while whole coconuts are offered, coconut water is generally avoided during the Shivling Abhishek ritual.
