Hinduism: Traditions and rules for puja lamps and incense

In Hindu worship traditions, specific rules govern the use of lamps (diyas) and incense sticks (agarbatti) to maintain spiritual sanctity.

Regarding wicks, cotton wicks are commonly used for daily prayers, rituals, and evening lamps, symbolizing purity and the removal of ignorance. In contrast, wicks made from Kalava (sacred thread) are typically reserved for special rituals, specific vows, or ceremonies intended to fulfill particular wishes or seek divine grace.

Furthermore, religious customs dictate that incense sticks should not be lit using the flame of a burning lamp. The lamp's flame is considered a sacred symbol of divine light and should be treated with distinct reverence. Instead, incense should be lit separately, such as with a matchstick. Additionally, it is traditionally advised not to blow out a lamp with breath; rather, it should be allowed to extinguish naturally or be put out safely according to established customs.
