Hindustan Copper stake sale raises ₹3,000 crore for Indian government

The Indian government has raised approximately ₹3,000 crore through the sale of a 6 per cent stake in state-owned Hindustan Copper. While the initial Offer for Sale (OFS) was planned for 3 per cent, high demand from institutional investors—bidding 3.41 times the shares on offer—prompted the government to exercise a green shoe option to sell an additional 3 per cent.

Following the successful disinvestment and strong Q1 FY27 financial results, which saw net profit surge by 162.47 per cent year-on-year, Hindustan Copper shares experienced a decline of roughly 2.59 per cent due to profit booking.

The company remains a strategic asset in India’s energy transition, as copper demand grows in sectors like electric vehicles, renewable energy, and power transmission. Analysts note that global copper prices are being supported by depleting inventories and supply constraints in regions such as Chile, Indonesia, and the Congo.
