Hip hop legacy and preservation highlighted in New York City

The cultural legacy of hip hop and breakdancing is being highlighted through new literature and community dialogue in New York City. Crazy Legs, founder of the Rock Steady Crew, has released a new book titled ‘Rock Steady For Life’. The work chronicles fifty years of B-boy culture, documenting the history of the crew and their role in popularizing breakdancing globally through historic tours in the 1980s.

In a separate discussion at Queensbridge Park, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and rapper Nas spoke about the importance of preserving hip hop’s roots in the Bronx and Queens. The conversation addressed how the rising cost of living in New York City threatens to displace the artists and communities that fostered the genre. Mamdani emphasized the need to ensure the city remains a viable home for creators so that art does not become a luxury good.
