Hip-hop sampling history and its musical evolution
Sampling is a foundational element of hip-hop culture, originating from techniques like DJ Kool Herc’s use of two turntables to isolate and extend instrumental breaks during a 1973 party in the Bronx. As technology progressed, pioneers such as Marley Marl began using samplers to reconstruct individual drum sounds into new rhythms.
Producers have utilized a wide range of genres, including soul, funk, jazz, rock, and R&B, to create musical collages. Notable examples include Public Enemy’s ‘Fight The Power,’ which utilized sounds from James Brown and Syl Johnson, and De La Soul’s ‘Me Myself And I,’ which incorporated Funkadelic’s ‘(Not Just) Knee Deep.’
