Hiroshima commemorates Atomic Bomb Day with peace events and nuclear disarmament calls

On August 5‑6, 2026, Hiroshima marked the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing with a series of peace‑focused activities. At the Atomic Bomb Dome’s nearby Genryu River promenade, a violin made from survivor‑crafted materials was played, and crowds gathered with penlights to call for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Kunihiko Sakuma, chair of the prefectural atomic‑bomb survivors association, highlighted the desire to “make August 6 a day of commitment to nuclear disarmament.”

The National Democratic Party for the People, led by Yuichiro Tamaki, issued a statement reaffirming its “non‑nuclear three principles” and urging the international community to strengthen the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The party linked the commemoration to ongoing global tensions, citing Russia’s war in Ukraine, Middle‑East instability, and perceived erosion of nuclear taboos.
