Hiroshima Mayor Matsui Unveils Peace Declaration Outline Criticising Nuclear Powers

Hiroshima City Mayor Matsui Ichiji announced the draft of a peace declaration that will be read at the August 6 ceremony commemorating the atomic bombing. The outline condemns the “bullying behaviour of great powers” that disregard international law and notes the failure of the recent Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference to adopt a final document. Matsui warned that ignoring the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons could lead to a “third Hiroshima‑Nagasaki” and urged policymakers to move beyond reliance on nuclear deterrence. The city plans to release an English‑language video of the declaration on YouTube to reach a global audience.
