Hiroshima Prefecture shuts restaurants after multiple Campylobacter food poisoning cases

Health officials in Hiroshima Prefecture reported two recent food‑poisoning outbreaks caused by Campylobacter bacteria. In Fukuyama City, the yakitori restaurant "焼鳥れんと道上店" served 14 diners on July 14; 11 (aged 20‑50) later experienced diarrhea, fever and abdominal pain. Tests confirmed Campylobacter, but no one required hospitalization and all recovered. The city health office ordered the shop closed on July 21.

Earlier in Mihara City, the eatery "べぇちょう本店" saw 16 patrons on July 11, of whom 10 developed similar symptoms. Campylobacter jejuni was identified in stool samples. The prefectural health department requested the restaurant stop serving customers on July 16 and imposed a ban on July 20. No hospitalizations were reported. Combined with cases in Onomichi and other local venues, the prefecture warned residents to fully cook meat and to ensure thorough cleaning of cooking utensils.
