HiroshimAI to host Tokyo AI Hackathon 2026 to address talent gap

HiroshimAI Inc. has announced the ‘Tokyo AI Hackathon 2026,’ scheduled for November 22, 2026, at Azabudai Hills. The event invites university and technical college students to develop functional AI products over a six-week period to address specific social challenges.

Recent data highlights a significant rise in AI adoption among Japanese students. According to the Sanno Institute of Management, 84.5% of students now continuously use generative AI, up from 57.7% the previous year. While usage is high, most applications are currently limited to personal tasks like information gathering and document preparation for job hunting.

This trend contrasts with a projected labor gap in Japan. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry estimates that by 2040, there will be a shortage of approximately 3.4 million personnel capable of utilizing AI and robotics, while administrative roles may see a surplus of 4.4 million. The hackathon aims to bridge this gap by providing students with practical experience in implementing AI to solve real-world problems.
