Hiscox survey highlights theft risks of luxury goods at Oktoberfest
A lifestyle survey by insurer Hiscox highlights a growing tension between the desire to showcase luxury items on social media and the increased risk of theft or loss. As the 191st Oktoberfest begins in Munich, attendees often bring high-value items such as designer bags, luxury watches, and exclusive sunglasses to the event.
The survey, which focused on travelers regularly carrying items worth at least 1,000 euros, found that 73 percent of respondents post images on social networks during their travels. Additionally, 67.2 percent reported intentionally staging jewelry, watches, or bags for vacation photos, with nearly half doing so multiple times.
Alina Sucker-Kastl, Product Head of Art & Private Clients at Hiscox Germany, noted that while high-end possessions are an expression of personal lifestyle, the act of displaying them online makes them more visible and increases potential risk. Experts suggest that owners of valuable items should ensure they are protected by appropriate insurance against loss, theft, or damage during large events and travels.
