Hispanic Heritage Month celebrated through community events in US cities
Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, is being marked by various cultural celebrations and community recognitions across the United States, including in Philadelphia and Chicago.
In Philadelphia, the 2026 Hispanic Heritage Month Gala was held at the Live! Casino & Hotel to honor leaders contributing to the growth of the local Latino community. Awards were presented to individuals for their work in healthcare, housing, business, and community services. Honorees included Teresa M. Lundy, Brenda Robles Cooke, Amanda Garayia, and Héctor Ayala.
In Chicago, community leaders and students at DePaul University are using the month to reflect on cultural pride and identity. The month-long observance, which was expanded from a week to a month by Congress in 1988, aligns with the independence days of several Latin American nations. Local organizations, such as the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center, continue to play a role in fostering cultural connection and recognition.
