Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations begin across the US and UK
National Hispanic Heritage Month is being observed in the United States from September 15 to October 15. The period commemorates the histories and contributions of Americans with roots in Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Spain. The timing aligns with the independence anniversaries of several Central American nations and Mexico.
Originally established as Hispanic Heritage Week following legislation by Representative Edward R. Roybal and signing by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968, the observance was later expanded into a month by President Ronald Reagan. Celebrations across the U.S. include educational programs, community festivals, and professional development initiatives through organizations like the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA).
In the United Kingdom, the period is recognized as Latin American Heritage Month, which has been observed since 2020 to highlight the culture and history of the growing Latin American diaspora in the country.
