Hispanic Heritage Month highlights cultural growth and representation

Hispanic Heritage Month serves to honor the culture, resilience, and achievements of Hispanic and Latino Americans. In higher education, Hispanic enrollment has seen steady growth in the United States over the last two decades. National data shows that Hispanic student enrollment rose from 9.5% in 2000 to 11.1% in 2006, with increased participation among young adults aged 18 to 24.

At UNC Charlotte, the Hispanic student population has grown significantly, reaching a record 5,147 students—approximately 15.5% of the student body—despite the impact of the 2023 Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard decision. Similarly, the NCAA has reported a rise in Hispanic athlete participation across all three major divisions since 2012.

On an individual level, the month celebrates personal contributions to various industries. For example, in the aviation sector, professionals like Briana Hrey highlight the importance of representing Hispanic and Latina women while maintaining connections to family traditions, food, and music.
