Hispanic Heritage Month highlights knowledge gaps and identity debates in the US

As Hispanic Heritage Month begins in the United States, new data highlights a gap in public knowledge regarding Hispanic history and identity. A survey conducted by Talker Research among 2,000 Americans revealed that 53% of respondents did not know who the first Hispanic person to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court was. Only 31% correctly identified Sonia Sotomayor, who was nominated by Barack Obama in 2009.

The survey also showed limited awareness of the official dates for Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15; only 34% of participants identified the timeframe correctly. Generational differences were noted, with Gen Z showing the highest familiarity at 48%, compared to 31% among baby boomers.

Beyond statistical data, there is ongoing discussion regarding the nuances of cultural labels. Individuals often debate the distinctions between terms such as Hispanic, Latino, and Latinx, frequently preferring specific national identities—such as Mexican, Salvadoran, or Colombian—over broader categories constructed by government or media institutions.
