Dominican Republic seismic risk highlighted by active faults and rising building inspections

Experts and authorities in the Dominican Republic are highlighting seismic risks due to the island of Hispaniola's location between the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates. A recent symposium at the Centro Cultural Taíno Casa del Cordón detailed the presence of 14 active geological faults, including the Septentrional and Enriquillo-Plantain Garden faults. Historical seismic events discussed included the 1946 earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8, as well as significant tremors in 1842, 1751, and 1770.

In response to regional seismic activity, the National Office for Seismic Evaluation and Infrastructure Vulnerability (Onesvie) has received over 2,000 requests from citizens and private entities seeking structural evaluations. Director Leonardo Reyes Madera noted that these free inspections aim to identify building weaknesses. Additionally, geologist Osiris de León has called for an urgent review of national construction codes to ensure critical infrastructure like hospitals and schools can withstand major movements, citing recent damage in other regional countries as a warning.
