Historian Iván Gatón calls for preservation of Dajabón's history

Historian Iván Gatón has called on the Dominican people to visit the province of Dajabón to better understand its significant role in the nation's history. During a lecture titled ‘Republica Dominicana un Pueblo de Guerreros’ (Dominican Republic, a People of Warriors), organized by the COOGLOBAL cooperative, Gatón emphasized the importance of preserving cultural and military heritage.

Gatón expressed concern regarding the current state of education, noting that many students remain unfamiliar with the lyrics of the National Anthem and the identities of key national heroes, despite living near monuments dedicated to them. He highlighted Dajabón as a site of major historical battles, including those in Capotillo, Sabana Larga, and Beller, which were instrumental in preventing Spanish annexation and ending Haitian incursions.

The historian noted that the province was a central stage for the efforts of patriots such as Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Matías Ramón Mella. He urged for the protection of these historical legacies to maintain the identity of the region.
