Historian Kazım Baykal honored on 33rd death anniversary in Bursa
A ceremony was held at the gravesite of Turkish historian Kazım Baykal in Bursa to mark the 33rd anniversary of his death. The event gathered local historians, members of civil society and citizens who highlighted Baykal’s lifelong work protecting the city’s cultural heritage.
Baykal co‑founded the Bursa Eski Eserleri Sevenler Kurumu in 1946, an association dedicated to documenting and preserving Bursa’s historic monuments. The organisation was later granted Public Benefit Association status by a Council of Ministers decree, which allowed it to remain open during the 1980 military coup – the only civil‑society body to survive that period. During the ceremony, its president Ali Turan reiterated the group’s commitment to honour Baykal and fellow scholar Prof. Dr. Halil İnalcık, who was also remembered on the 10th anniversary of his death. Baykal’s seminal work “Bursa ve Anıtları” was cited as a cornerstone reference for the city’s history.
