Historian Marc Bloch inducted into the Pantheon

Historian Marc Bloch and his wife Simonne have been inducted into the Pantheon in Paris, making Bloch the first historian to receive this honor. The ceremony, attended by President Emmanuel Macron and various dignitaries, took place at the secular temple of civic virtue in the Latin Quarter.

Bloch, a Sorbonne professor and expert on feudalism and medieval agrarian history, had a prolific career despite its brevity. He founded a significant journal of historical research and authored several influential works, including ‘Feudal Society’ and ‘The Royal Touch’.

Beyond his academic contributions, Bloch served as an infantry officer during the First World War and later joined the French Resistance. He was captured and executed by the Gestapo in June 1944. His induction places him alongside other notable French citizens such as Charles de Gaulle, Marie Curie, and Victor Hugo.
