Historian Tobias Korenke calls for debate on German remembrance culture

Historian Dr. Tobias Korenke is calling for a fundamental debate regarding the future of Germany’s remembrance culture. In discussions with WELT, Korenke questioned whether the transmission of National Socialist history has effectively reached the broader population, suggesting that current efforts may have “grandiosely failed.”

Korenke pointed to the electoral successes of the AfD and ongoing debates surrounding antisemitism as evidence of this failure. He criticized existing historical education for being too much of a “Studienratsprojekt” (teacher's project), arguing that it has been too heavily focused on academic and highly educated social circles while failing to engage diverse groups, including those from immigrant backgrounds.

As the grandson of resistance fighter Rüdiger Schleicher and great-nephew of theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Korenke has actively opposed the AfD's attempts to co-opt historical resistance. He previously described the party's participation in memorial services as an “immense lack of taste,” asserting that a party with far-right affiliations has no place at commemorations for those who died for democracy and human dignity.
