Historians analyze the legacy of Juan Pablo Duarte

Historians are providing analysis on the legacy and character of Juan Pablo Duarte, the founding father of the Dominican Republic.

Roberto Casaá, director of the Archivo General de la Nación, described Duarte as a radical democrat and revolutionary who founded the secret society La Trinitaria to facilitate the break from Haiti. Casaá explicitly rejected claims that Duarte was racist or classist, arguing instead that Duarte promoted a 'unity of race' based on the ethnic fusion of the Dominican people and advocated for democratic elements such as a municipal fourth power in his constitutional ideas.

Additionally, historian Robert Espinal emphasized the role of ethics and faith in Duarte's life. Espinal suggested that Duarte’s ability to undertake the massive struggle for independence, despite the immense personal risks and difficulties, was driven by a profound faith. He noted that Duarte's actions were marked by a conviction that transcended personal interest in favor of a collective national project.
