Historians identify 180 international volunteers in 1936 Gipuzkoa

Historians Aitzol Arroyo and Aitor Azurki have released a new book documenting the lives of 180 international volunteers who fought in Gipuzkoa during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Through extensive archival research, the authors identified individuals from across Europe and the Americas who traveled to the Basque Country to fight against fascist forces.

The researchers distinguish these fighters as ‘internationalists’ rather than members of the International Brigades, as many arrived in the Basque region after the brigades were established in Albacete. The book provides a chronological narrative of their journeys, combat experiences, and ultimate fates, concluding with detailed profiles of each individual, including their names, origins, and political militancy.
