Historic castles preserve heritage in Rio de Janeiro and Petrópolis

Rio de Janeiro and the mountainous Serrana region host several historic castles that reflect the state's imperial past and diverse architectural influences.

In Petrópolis, the Castelo São Manoel was built in 1920 by Oscar de Teffé in an English style to honor his heir, Manoel. The site's history dates back to the 1820s when Emperor Dom Pedro I showed interest in the region. Another notable landmark, the Castelo de Itaipava, was designed by architects Lucio Costa and Fernando Valentim. Inspired by European medieval styles, the construction utilized materials brought from various countries, including stone from Portugal.

Additionally, construction is progressing on the Castelo do Pontal in Recreio dos Bandeirantes. Featuring medieval-style towers and a large gate, this leisure complex is scheduled for inauguration in July 2027.
