Turkey advances heritage restorations and cultural projects

In Kahramanmaraş, authorities are completing the restoration of the historic Ceyhan Bridge, which was damaged in the February 2023 earthquakes. The work reinforces the structure and reinstates its original stone façade, preparing the bridge for reopening to traffic.

In Gaziantep, the Bey Mahallesi district welcomed the new Art Street, part of the Bey Mahallesi Protection, Restoration and Revitalisation Project. The opening, attended by Mayor Fatma Şahin, highlighted the area’s 16th‑century houses, traditional crafts and cultural performances, aiming to turn the neighbourhood into a living cultural centre.

In İzmir, the Konak bus stop was inaugurated after a rapid 30‑day construction. Designed to echo the architecture of the Atatürk Cultural Center and the Konak Ferry Terminal, the stop features sun‑, wind‑ and sea‑inspired motifs, modern glass canopies and improved passenger comfort.

In Samsun’s Çarşamba district, restoration of the 8½‑century Göceli Nail‑less Mosque is 10 % complete, with an expected finish in August 2027 and a budget of 32.73 million TL. The project preserves the building’s unique wood‑frame and “çivi‑less” construction techniques.

Work on the medieval Ani Cathedral, located in Turkey’s eastern region, continues with metal reinforcement and research by Kafkas University. The UNESCO World Heritage site benefits from international support aimed at safeguarding its architectural legacy.
