Historic landmarks in Spain repurposed as luxury hotels
Spain features several luxury hotels housed within historic landmarks that blend ancient architecture with modern amenities.
In the Basque Country, the Castillo de Arteaga, a 13th-century fortress located in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, serves as a notable example. The castle underwent reconstruction in 1856 under the orders of Napoleon III and Eugenia de Montijo. Today, the hotel offers 14 rooms within a neo-medieval palace characterized by French Gothic elements.
In Ibiza, the La Torre de Canónigo hotel represents a significant heritage rehabilitation project within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Dalt Vila. The complex consists of three historic buildings: the original La Torre del Canónigo, the 16th-century Jesuit convent Casa Puget, and the maritime-linked Corsario. The renovation required strict adherence to conservation laws to preserve original materials, walls, and structures while integrating 21st-century comforts.
