Historic Marker Unveiled in Brewton, Alabama Honoring 1813 Battle of Burnt Corn

A new historic marker was unveiled at Jennings Park in Brewton, Alabama, to commemorate the 1813 Battle of Burnt Corn, the first clash of the Creek War between American forces and the Red Stick faction of the Muscogee.

The dedication ceremony featured Jimmy Adkisson, president of the Escambia County Historical Society, and vice‑president Don Sales, who thanked contributors including Robert Smiley. Bill Bailey, Tribal Historical Preservation Officer for the Poarch Creek Indians, highlighted the battle’s lasting impact on Creek migration and the Trail of Tears. State Rep. Alan Baker urged the marker to serve as an educational reminder for future generations.
