Historic Çoban Mektebi Hosts 6th Ankara Conferences
The historic Çoban Mektebi building in Keçiören, now operating as the Atatürk Ankara National Struggle Museum, was the venue for the 6th Ankara Conferences series organized by the Atatürk Research Center. The conference, titled “Two Overlooked Educational Institutions in Political Turmoil: Ankara Ziraat and Çoban Mektebi,” examined the institutions’ origins in the late‑19th‑century Ottoman modernization of agriculture and education and their influence on the Turkish National Struggle.
Key speakers included Keçiören Municipality Deputy Mayor Av. Serkan Bedirhanoğlu, Atatürk Research Center President Prof. Ahmet Kılınç, Ankara University scholars Prof. Necdet Aysal and Prof. Mesut Çapa, municipal official Ayşe Sucu, and 1453 Youth Association President Serkan Ülker. Attendees toured the museum before the panel, hearing that the Çoban Mektebi was founded as Ankara Numune Tarlası and Çoban Mektebi in the 1890s, later becoming the Ankara Ziraat Mektebi, a cornerstone of modern agricultural education and a symbolic witness to the independence movement.
