Historic Spanish towns showcase medieval and noble heritage

Spain features several historic towns with rich architectural and cultural heritage. In the province of La Coruña, the medieval town of Betanzos is recognized as a historical-artistic site. While famous for its traditional tortilla, the town also boasts Gothic churches such as Santiago, San Francisco, and Santa María del Azogue, as well as the 19th-century Parque del Pasatiempo.

In the Sierra de Gata region of Extremadura, the village of Hoyos serves as another notable historical site. Once a summer retreat for the bishops of Coria, the town contains noble palaces and manor houses. Its history includes Roman and Arab settlements, and it is the site where Bishop Don Juan Álvarez de Castro was killed by French troops in 1809 during the War of Independence.
