Historic train collides with construction platform in Italy

A historic tourist train operated by Ferrovia dei Parchi collided with a construction platform on a railway bridge in Roccaraso, Italy, on October 10. The incident occurred on the Sulmona-Carpinone line during reconstruction work on a bridge spanning the SS17 state road.

Approximately 400 passengers were on board the vintage train at the time of the collision, but no travelers were injured. Passengers were subsequently transferred to an alternative train to continue their journey.

Three construction workers, aged between 50 and 56, sustained injuries. Two workers fell from the platform during the impact, while a third remained on the structure. One worker, aged 56, suffered serious injuries and required transport to a hospital in Pescara after adverse weather conditions prevented a helicopter evacuation. The train driver also received medical attention for minor injuries.

Preliminary reports suggest the driver attempted to brake after spotting the platform and workers, but was unable to stop in time. The local prosecutor’s office in Sulmona has launched an investigation into the incident to determine if safety protocols were followed.
