Historic Villa Marta in Písek burns in extensive fire

A fire broke out at the historic Villa Marta on the outskirts of Písek on Wednesday evening. Professional firefighters from the South Bohemian fire department and volunteer units from Písek, Kestřany, Protivín and nearby villages fought the blaze for about an hour and a half before it was fully extinguished. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated and a later assessment will determine the extent of the damage.

Villa Marta was built in 1926 in a modernist style by banker Jaroslav Šimek and named after his wife, Marta. The property, once part of a large estate, fell into disrepair after the family was dispossessed under the communist regime and had been abandoned for years, making it a protected historic monument.
