Historical and creative applications of photography techniques

Photography has evolved through various technical and creative methods to enhance visual storytelling and emotional connection. In modern contexts, digital editing allows photographers to add elements like butterflies to images to introduce movement, color, and themes of transformation or renewal.

Historically, the medium saw the rise of spirit photography during the Victorian era. Following William Mumler’s 1861 self-portrait, which appeared to feature a second figure, a market emerged for images that allowed grieving individuals to see deceased loved ones. These effects were achieved through technical processes such as double exposures and superimposed negatives on glass plates.
