Historical context of Israel and the Balfour Declaration
The history of Israel is defined by its 1948 declaration of independence following United Nations Resolution 181, which recommended partitioning the territory into Jewish and Arab states. Since the 1967 Six-Day War, the occupation of Palestinian territories and the Golan Heights has remained a source of international tension and condemnation.
A foundational moment in the region's history occurred on November 2, 1917, with the issuance of the Balfour Declaration. Arthur James Balfour, the British Foreign Secretary, sent a letter to Lord Walter Rothschild expressing British support for the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine. While the declaration included assurances that the rights of existing non-Jewish communities would not be prejudiced, its imprecise language was interpreted by the Zionist Federation as formal recognition of Jewish rights to the land.
