Historical election fraud in Latin America
Historical analyses of political relations between the United States and Latin America highlight several instances of alleged election interference and fraud in the region.
Key historical examples include the 1988 Mexican presidential election, where a computer blackout was used to alter results in favor of Carlos Salinas de Gortari. In 2000, Alberto Fujimori in Peru secured victory through blatant vote and tally manipulation, leading the Organization of American States to withdraw its observer mission in protest.
In Honduras, the 2017 elections allowed for the reelection of Juan Orlando Hernández following a similar computer blackout. Hernández was later convicted in U.S. courts in 2024 and sentenced to 45 years in prison for drug trafficking while serving as president. However, he received a pardon from Donald Trump in November 2025.
