Historical GDR railcar to run special excursions in Saxony

A historical rapid combustion railcar, the VT 18.16, will conduct two special excursions through Saxony on September 12, 2026. Organized by the Förderverein VT 18.16 e. V., the train was originally a prestige vehicle for the Deutsche Reichsbahn during the GDR era.

The first route runs from Dresden Hauptbahnhof to Görlitz and back. The second, newly introduced route, travels from Görlitz through Dresden to Bad Schandau and back.

Ticket prices for the Dresden–Görlitz–Dresden route range between 113 and 133 euros, with family seating groups costing 306 euros. For the Elbe Valley route, individual tickets are priced between 129 and 149 euros, while family groups are 338 euros. Onboard options include eight-person compartments, revolving seats in the main area, and a six-seat first-class compartment, with catering provided by Mitropa.
