Historical investigations underway regarding WWII-era remains in Poland and Ukraine

Archaeological and historical investigations are underway regarding the discovery of human remains in a forest near Domatówko, Poland. Preliminary findings suggest the remains may belong to a prisoner of the Nazi Stutthof concentration camp. The Gniewino Historical Association and Detekt Archaeological Services are working to secure and document the site to determine the identity and circumstances of the individual's death.

In a separate historical recovery effort, the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) has announced plans to begin exhumations in Lviv, Ukraine, starting August 25, 2026. The project, which is scheduled to run until October 2, aims to recover the remains of Polish Army soldiers who fell defending Lviv in September 1939. The operation involves archaeological excavation, anthropological examination, and the preservation of artifacts to assist in identifying the fallen soldiers through genetic research and material evidence. The initiative is being conducted in cooperation with the Ukrainian company ‘Ukraińska Pamięć’ and supported by various Polish cultural and diplomatic institutions.
