Historical landmarks and ancient trees face preservation challenges
Historical and environmental landmarks are facing preservation challenges in Paraguay and Mexico. In Asunción, Paraguay, Bernardino Caballero Park is celebrating its centenary. Originally the residence of General Bernardino Caballero, the site is undergoing a transformation to restore its splendor after decades of deterioration. The park serves as a significant municipal site containing historical architecture, such as the Palomar and the country’s first Olympic pool, as well as diverse botanical species.
In Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico, local residents successfully intervened to stop the removal of the last surviving Sideroxylon capiri tree in the El Capire colony. The tree, a century-old specimen, was nearly destroyed after the Municipal Ecology Directorate authorized its felling. While citizen mobilization halted the machinery, the tree suffered significant damage during the process. The species is native to Mexico and holds deep ecological and cultural importance for the identity of the neighborhood.
