Historical massacres in Poland and Czech Republic commemorated
Commemorations and historical accounts have highlighted tragic wartime massacres in Poland and the Czech Republic. In Szczuczki, residents and officials gathered to mark the 87th anniversary of a mass murder that occurred on October 1, 1939. During that event, German soldiers murdered and burned over 100 men in a local school building, marking one of the first mass executions of civilians in the Lublin region.
Separately, historical records detail a brutal massacre at the KL Auschwitz Wirtschaftshof Budy subcamp near Brzeszcz. On the night of October 5-6, 1942, German personnel and female prisoner-functionaries murdered approximately 90 female prisoners, many of whom were young Jewish women from France. The victims were killed with blunt instruments and axes. While officials at the time claimed the violence was a response to a revolt, the event is described as a senseless massacre carried out by camp staff.
