Historical milestones: Battle of Hastings and sound barrier breakthrough

Historical events commemorated on October 14 include the Battle of Hastings in 1066, where William the Conqueror defeated the Anglo-Saxons led by King Harold II. The death of Harold II during the battle allowed William to conquer England by the end of that year, fundamentally altering English society and aristocracy.

In 1322, Robert the Bruce secured a victory over King Edward II of England at the Battle of Old Bylands on the border between England and Scotland. This victory contributed to the recognition of Scottish independence.

In 1947, Chuck Yeager became the first person to break the sound barrier in level flight using the Bell X-1 experimental rocket aircraft over the Mojave Desert in California.
