Historical milestones: Battle of Nicopolis and Bucharest North Station

September 25 marks several significant historical milestones in Eastern Europe. In 1396, the Battle of Nicopolis took place in present-day Bulgaria, where Ottoman forces led by Sultan Bayezid I defeated a Christian coalition led by Sigismund of Luxembourg, King of Hungary. The coalition included a military corps from Wallachia commanded by Mircea the Elder. This defeat facilitated Ottoman expansion into the Balkans, a period of influence that lasted approximately 350 years.

In Romania, the date also commemorates the 1848 decree regarding the exile of leaders from the Wallachian Revolution. Additionally, the anniversary marks the 154th year since the inauguration of the Bucharest North Railway Station in 1872 and the opening of the Bucharest-Ploiești railway line. Originally known as Gara Târgoviștei, the station eventually became the primary railway hub for both the capital and the country.
