Historical milestones commemorated on October 28 and 29

Historical records highlight several significant events occurring on October 28 and 29. In 1688, Constantin Brâncoveanu ascended to the throne of Wallachia, beginning a reign characterized by cultural and artistic flourishing, including the development of the ‘Brâncovenesc style’ and the establishment of various schools and churches.

Other notable historical occurrences include the 1916 Battle of Oituz, where Romanian troops resisted German-Austrian offensives, and King Ferdinand I’s 1918 proclamation urging soldiers to pursue the unification of all Romanians. Additionally, the 1920 Treaty signed in Paris between Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan, and Romania recognized Romanian sovereignty over the territory between the Prut and Nistru rivers.

On an international scale, the first steam-powered warship, the USS Fulton, was launched in New York in 1814. Furthermore, the foundation of the precursor to the International Committee of the Red Cross took place in Geneva in 1863 following an international conference initiated by Henry Dunant.
