Historical milestones commemorated on September 30

September 30 marks several significant historical milestones. In 1452, the Gutenberg Bible was published, representing one of the first books printed in Europe using Johannes Gutenberg’s typography invention, which facilitated the rapid spread of knowledge during the Renaissance.

Other notable events include the 1846 first use of anesthesia in surgery by dentist William T. G. Morton, the 1882 launch of the world’s first commercial hydroelectric plant in Appleton, Wisconsin, and the 1954 official entry into service of the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine.

In aviation, the first Boeing 747, known as the Jumbo Jet, emerged from its factory in Everett in 1968. Additionally, the date marks the 1630 execution of John Billington, the first person executed in the United States.
