Historical milestones observed on August 26

August 26 marks several significant historical milestones across science, art, and natural history.

In science, Antoine Lavoisier, the founder of modern chemistry who formulated the law of conservation of mass, was born in 1743. Additionally, the First Belgrade Gymnasium was established in 1839.

In the arts, Michelangelo received the commission for his famous sculpture, the Pietà, in 1498.

Natural and military history also note this date: the catastrophic eruption of the Krakatoa volcano occurred in 1883, resulting in a massive tsunami and approximately 36,000 deaths in Indonesia. In 1346, the Battle of Crécy took place during the Hundred Years' War, where English longbowmen secured a victory over French forces.
