Origins and evolution of Halloween traditions
The origins of Halloween are frequently linked to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated in Ireland and other Celtic regions to mark the end of the harvest and the beginning of a dark season. Traditions suggest that during Samhain, the boundary between the living and the dead thinned, leading people to light fires and use disguises to protect themselves from supernatural forces.
While many associate modern Halloween customs directly with Irish paganism, some historians argue that the contemporary celebration is more heavily influenced by English traditions, a ninth-century pope, and American consumerism. Nineteenth-century folklorists are credited with creating the direct historical link between Samhain and modern Halloween by connecting lingering rural customs to ancient pagan roots.
Over time, the practice of wearing costumes has transitioned from a protective measure against spirits into a form of entertainment, featuring popular figures such as ghosts, witches, and vampires.
