Historical origins of Paris and Hanoi street names

The historical naming conventions of Paris and Hanoi reflect their distinct cultural and colonial evolutions.

In Paris, the city's name traces back over two thousand years to the Parisii, a Celtic tribe that inhabited the Seine River basin long before the Roman conquest and the rise of the Frankish kingdoms. Despite shifting political powers and the eventual transformation of the settlement into a major European capital, the identity of the Parisii remains embedded in the city's name.

Hanoi's street naming history was heavily influenced by its period as a colonial capital. Following French traditions established after the 1789 Revolution, the city initially featured streets named after French colonial officials and political figures. Over time, Vietnamese figures were integrated into the urban landscape. Starting in the late 1910s, names of Nguyen Dynasty officials and classical Vietnamese luminaries were applied to smaller streets, while larger boulevards eventually honored figures from various historical eras, including the Hai Ba Trung, Dinh, Ly, Tran, and Later Le dynasties.
