Historical overview of Ommen markets and knowledge market event
The town of Ommen has a long history of commerce, featuring a weekly goods market held every Tuesday from 8:00 to 13:00. Historically, the town hosted the Ommer Bissingh annual fair, which has been documented since 1567. While the annual fair continues in a modified form, the town's former pig market—once one of the largest in Overijssel—was discontinued by the municipality in 1990 due to financial losses.
Following renovations to the town center, a new market area near the Vechtkade was opened in 2016, relocating the weekly goods market from the city center to a centralized location.
Separately, the Kennismarkt (Knowledge Market) serves as a networking platform for organizations involved in social facilities and real estate. The event focuses on social real estate, including buildings for education, sports, healthcare, and community activities. Participants include platforms like Bouwstenen, as well as technology providers such as Condor and Declan, which offer software and AI solutions for sustainable property management.
