Historical Patent Confirms Front-Facing Toilet Paper Roll Is Hygienic

A 1891 patent filed by inventor Seth Wheeler and the Albany Perforated Wrapping Paper Company shows that a toilet‑paper roll should be placed with the sheet hanging over the front of the holder. The original patent document was rediscovered in 2015 by writer Owen Williams in the Google Patents archive.

Medical specialist Christian Moro of the University of Bond explains that this front‑facing orientation reduces the chance that a user’s hands touch the bathroom wall, where bacteria such as E. coli, streptococci, staphylococci and cold‑virus particles often reside. The historical design and the health recommendation together support the front‑over method as the most hygienic way to install a toilet‑paper roll.
